How it all started
It was the summer of 2006. Robert Castellucci was working at a local student community in Gainesville, Florida. Robert had sent out several hundred roommate assignments to new residents, which had been selected by the housing office using pen and paper questionnaires.
That day, Robert fielded 30 calls from upset residents, each asking for a new roommate. He heard the same story every time: "I Facebooked my new roommate and..." The proverbial lightbulb went off in his head and the concept for RoomSync was born.
And then Facebook Platform happened
At the time, Facebook applications did not even exist! It was a full year before Facebook announced the launch of Facebook Platform at their F8 Conference. Robert then reached out to classmate Michael Hacker who recruited childhood friends Alex Edelsburg and Ariel Himmelstern and the RoomSync team was born!
Why roommate pairings matter
At our company's core is the belief that roommate self-selection improves the quality of students' lives. Our mission is to reduce roommate conflict and increase student success by empowering students to self-select their roommates.
We support the Big Goal of The Lumina Foundation to increase the proportion of Americans with high-quality degrees and credentials to 60 percent by the year 2025. We believe that an important step towards achieving this goal is to improve students' quality of life through more compatible roommate pairings, and a recent study led by Michigan State University agrees with us.
